Everything in the middle feels like filler. The first few sequences in Florence, setting up Ezio's backstory and going after the Pazzi, and the final two sequences where you're actually going up against Rodrigo Borgia are by far the best. Machiavelli's reaction in Brotherhood perfectly sums how I felt about the situation.
The biggest surprise was that Ezio didn't kill him at the end, which by the way was FUCKING STUPID. Yeah he becomes Pope at the end, but if you knew who Rodrigo Borgia was (or Googled him, as I often do with historical figures I'm interested in during these games), that wouldn't be a surprise. They tell you very early on the name of the person at the center of the conspiracy. There's no big twist at the end like the first game. Ezio goes on a quest for revenge and to finish his father's work, and becomes an Assassin himself along the way. Rodrigo Borgia orchestrates a grand conspiracy to place the Templars into positions of power, and ends up killing Ezio's father and brothers in the process. Without a doubt, the most praised thing about this game is the story. And frankly, that's bullshit.ĪCII is a great game, but it has it's issues, and just like the first game, it's fair share of frustration.
But I hear so many people say that it was all down hill for the AC series after the second. In most cases this would make sense, the next installment improving upon the last, even if only slightly. Well, I've started playing Brotherhood, and already it feels even better than ACII. But so many people claim that it's "the best AC ever". I think it did indeed set the standard for the games that followed, and it brought into existence one of the greatest video game characters of all time.
However I will say that it seems the nostalgia goggles are on full force in this case, as, having recently finished ACII and basically getting 100% (minus all the treasure boxes), the game is not as great as people make it out to be.ĭon't get me wrong, I do love the game.
